6/7/2023 0 Comments Uriah heep high priestess![]() When I first heard them, I thought they were unspeakably derivative, but after really delving into them I came to realise that although they didn't exactly tread a narrow path, they did make music with a lot of style and heart and they are always entertaining to listen to. This is roughly the same way I feel about Uriah Heep. The 30 songs are taken from nine studio albums: Uriah Heep (Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble in the U.K.), Salisbury, Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards. 1998's two-CD Classic Heep: An Anthology is a terrific compilation of Uriah Heep's 1970-1976 prime. However, when I actually picked up a few issues of Shazam! and read them, I found that even with the derivative elements and the childish fantasy aspects (such as Tawky Tawny The Talking Tiger), Shazam! had some really tight and creative storytelling and a high level of entertainment value. Well then, this critic is probably dead, because the British band did achieve widespread success. I believed that Captain Marvel was a transparent Superman rip-off aimed at small children who'd ingested too many paint chips. When I was 11 and into comic books, I liked Superman but put my nose in the air at Captain Marvel. I was thinking about Heep this weekend and I find them to be an example of what I call The Captain Marvel Effect. I've never heard Ken Hensley say, "Well, I was listening to AHM, and." But it really isn't a smoking gun though. So that's some circumstantial evidence that they did borrow from PF, among others. I admit that I do see Heep as being pretty derivative, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.īy way of a more serious, pertinent response, I would say that, yeah, "Echoes In The Dark" does kinda sound like AHM, and in response to an interviewer comparing them to Pink Floyd and a handful of other bands, one of them responded by saying, "Now, those are all bands that we like." You can see it in one of the clippings on the inner sleeve of the Uriah Heep Live album.
